Equipment and training for a triathlon can be an expensive venture. However, as a recreational club, we invite anyone that has a desire to swim, a bicycle and a pair of running shoes to join the club.

Specific equipment that you will need to provide are:

  • bicycle in good working condition (mountain or road; BMX bikes are not allowed for adults)
  • running shoes
  • workout clothes (in other words... swimsuit, shorts, shirt, and water bottle)

Since we live in a climate that is not great for year round outdoor cycling (i.e. snow and ice) a mag, or wind, trainer is required (these trainers connect to the back wheel of the bicycle - click here for an image). If you feel that you will be doing a few triathlons this year, it is recommended that you purchase one (club pricing is available if we do a bulk order). It is also recommended that you swap out the rear tire of a mountain bike to a "slick" tire so that the mag trainer does not get damaged, and does not do damage to your good tire (road bikes should also swap tires since the trainer does weaken the rubber wall).

Group training takes place Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at the Gallager Centre Flexi-hall. There will also be a special monthly group swims scheduled, and we encourage members to use the lane swim times as well. Runs are on your own, or we encourage you to meet up with the Yorkton Pacers for group runs (Tues/Thurs 6:30pm and Sat 10:00am at YRHS parking lot).

Once the weather in the Spring improves, we will take the brick workout to the open road and will try to have some group open water swim sessions at one of the lakes in the area.

Training in General

The workouts are based on 5 days of training and 2 days of rest. Each month the training will increase in time and intensity in order to improve and to be able to complete an Olympic Distance Triathlon/Duathlon for the year. However, as a recreational club with members having a range of goals, time commitments and other life considerations and abilities, there will be a "core" set of workouts that will be recommended to do in order to complete a "try-a-tri" or "sprint" distance races and feel good about it. These recommended workouts will include the "Brick" club workout, a swim and the "long" run. Each workout can be altered in order to fit lifestyle needs and commitments.
